Atopic dermatitis is a chronic (long-lasting) disease that affects the skin. It is not contagious; it cannot be passed from one person to another. The word “dermatitisâ€means inflammation of the skin. “Atopic†refers to a group of diseases where there is often an inherited tendency to develop other allergic conditions, such as asthma and hay fever. In atopic dermatitis, the skin becomes extremely itchy. Atopic dermatitis is often referred to as “eczema,†which is a general term for the several types of inflammation of the skin. [tag]Atopic dermatitis[/tag] is the most common of the many types of eczema.
One main misconceptions on eczema is that this skin disorder is caused by overactive immune systems. Doctors categorize eczema sufferers as not having a healthy or strong immune system. Through my experience, I find this somehow misleading. Eczema is more likely due to an out of balance or unhealthy immune system. As a result of the immune systems weaknesses, it becomes overwhelmed by toxins that your body would normally handle without an individual even realizing a battle had taken place. Doctors response to the “overactive immune response” is to suppress the immune system. Suppressing the immune system brings negative side effects in the long term. The better way to respond to the immune
system’s cry for help in fighting the toxic environment is to feed the immune system those nutrients to which it is deficient.
I have taken my son to a few reputable dermatologists and each time, they give me a simple response, that is, there is no cure for eczema; and therefore, symptom suppression is the only alternative. Personally, I think the more accurate statement is that modern medicine doesn’t have a cure; which means, they haven’t yet developed a medication that would permanently suppress the symptoms. I wouldn’t want to use that type of cure if they came up with it. I don’t want to suppress the body’s ability to tell me when something is wrong. They also state there is no cure for the common cold; however, most people don’t fear that prognosis. Why? Because the body heals itself; and therefore, why do you need a cure for what the body already cures on its own. This same premise applies to eczema. If you feed the body what it is asking for and remove the allergen/irritants promoting the toxic environment, then the body will be able to complete the healing process it started with eczema response.
In a sentence; the difference between the doctors response to eczema and my personal response is that they chose to suppress/hide the symptoms and I rather chose to address/heal the body of the symptom. In other words; we chose to acknowledge what the body was saying and respond with wisdom, allowing the body to guide us in the process.
This will be the principle which this blog will be based on. Choose to positively address to the symptoms rather than suppress it. Although I agree that eczema cannot be cured permanently (at least until now), it can be controlled and overcome. Once you have found a way to control it, it is possible to achieve an eczema free lifestyle.
