Laura Weaver suffers a rare skin condition, which has left her allergic to almost everything. The brave teenager has finally been able to go back to school, after staff created a special ‘clean room’ to protect her from dozens or irritants.
Laura, 13, is covered in painful, itchy eczema rashes and has to wear bandages 24 hours a day and apply creams every hour. Doctors believe her condition is due to a breakdown of her immune system, which has made her skin hyper-sensitive.
Laura’s skin flares up after being triggered by any one of a dozen allergies. A whiff of perfume, the smell of an air freshener or just brushing past someone’s clothes can leave her doubled over in pain.
She is allergic to all dairy products, some fruit and wheat, all soaps, sprays and perfumes and even reacts to non-cotton clothing and some plastic furniture.
A peanut would send her into lethal anaphylactic shock, and even central heating gives her a high temperature, breathing problems and causes her skin to come up in vivid red rashes.
Her parents Lisa, a 41-year-old nurse and Mike, a 49-year-old fire safety consultant, said almost anything can trigger Laura’s allergic reactions.
Lisa, of Hereford, said: “There are very few cases as severe as Laura’s. She’s allergic to all sorts of foods, to furniture and clothes.
“Her skin becomes prickly and itchy, and starts to break and bleed. It’s horribly painful and she can have trouble breathing. She also becomes allergic to her own medicines. There are so many allergies that when she gets a reaction, we don’t know what has caused it.
“It could be someone’s clothing who has walked past her in the street which has caused her skin to flare up. You don’t know how serious these allergic reactions will be. They can be life-threatening.”
