The Ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3 is Crucial

Posted under Herbal remedies resources, health living articles by Audrey Lynn

Most of us are familiar with the benefits of Omega 6 and 3 in our diet, but do you know that the ratio of both of these essential oils is as crucial? Studies has found that excess of Omega 6 compared to Omega 3 promotes tumor formation. Many experts suggest that the ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 should not be greater than 5:1. However, a typical diet of most people is in excess of 20:1. This is largely due to the increased usage of vegetable oils in our daily diet which contains mostly Omega 6 with little or no Omega 3.

Some of the rich source of Omega 6 includes vegetable seed oils and seeds, such as safflower, sunflower, corn, sesame. These oils contains only small amount of Omega 3. Thus excess consumption of such oils may produce unsafe excess of Omega 6 to Omega 3. Vegetable oils which contains higher amount of Omega 3 include pumpkin seed oil, soy bean oil, walnut oil and hemp oil. The richest source of Omega 3 is flax oil. Therefore, flax oil can be used to balance out the excess of Omega 6 compared to Omega 3. However, large consumption of flax oil can lead to excess amount of Omega 3 which can lowered the immune system and cause health problems. Therefore the ideal balance is to consume an oil blend with the ideal ration of the two essential oils.
